Councillor Doug Oliver

Profile

Independent Councillors have served Collington Ward since 2011 and it has been my privilege to serve its residents since being elected to Rother Council in 2014 (re-elected 2015 and 2019).

In 2010, after a successful career, I returned to Bexhill – the town where I was born and educated – and joined the Independents, among whom were John Lee, Stuart Earl and Tony Mansi. As Independents a passion about placing residents’ needs before national party politics.

In 2016, in our quest to ensure a greater say for residents in local matters, I worked with residents’ lobby group Democracy for Bexhill (D4B). The campaign, culminating in excess of 9,000 signatures to a petition to review the governance of Bexhill, set in place the process of change.

Following the elections of 2019, newly elected members, led by the Independents, formed an Alliance with Liberal Democrats, Labour and Greens and worked to establish a Town Council for Bexhill. This was successfully created in 2021. Working together with Town, Parish Councils and community groups is vital to support residents – working together works.
Since 2019, as Leader of Rother District Council, leading a very successful Rother Alliance, we have, despite the challenges of recent and current geopolitical uncertainty, worked collaboratively to support vulnerable people and sustain services. Major achievements are listed on the leaflet.

As there is much to be completed, I trust you will support me at the forthcoming election so I may continue to be a part of the work that is required to be taken forward.
